Unless you’ve been living under a rock somewhere for the past few decades, you understand the importance of having a great-looking cover on your information product. Whether you are creating print books, e-books, DVDs, CDs or even digital product downloads, professional-looking graphics will make or break your sales success! There is no escaping it!
Unfortunately, when it comes to actually finding a graphic designer to create your cover design, you quickly discover one of two scenarios:
People who “claim” to be graphic designers but don’t know sh** about design…and it shows.
Designers who DO know what they’re doing and CHARGE you for the privilege of tapping into their skills.
Of course, there IS a third option…design your covers yourself…but it’s likely that you’re clueless where to begin. And then there’s the cost of the software you’ll need to “do it right.” Well…good luck with that, but it’s likely that, whatever you come up with, it’s going to suck…just being real!
The problem really is a bit of a cost paradox:
How can you get a professional looking design for your book or product without spending a fortune on a designer or on the professional design software you need?
It seems that regardless of the path you take to obtain a professional-looking design for your product cover (hiring a designer or designing it yourself), it’s going to cost you a small fortune. And even then, getting the results you want and deserve is like play Design Roulette…who knows WHAT you’ll end up with?
The truth is, you get what you pay for. You know it’s true!
Personally, I believe the WORST CASE SCENARIO…one I’ve seen played out over and over…is when authors and product creators (people just like YOU) settle for “good enough.” Mediocre cover designs have cost authors and entrepreneurs MILLIONS (literally)!
No don’t get me wrong…I believe that a good graphic designer or book designer is worth EVERY penny they charge! I was one of those designers for 19 years, with nearly 600 book covers to my credit. Just the other day I sat down and calculated how many design hours I have in creating book covers and other designs. I was stunned to discover that I have spent over 30,000 hours designing book and product covers…holy cow! That skill DOES have serious value!
Over the past few years, I’ve had conversations with many authors and information product creators, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked to reveal how I do it…how I create the professional-looking covers I create. They were asking me to reveal the design secrets I use and have developed over years of working as a book designer.
To be honest, I’ve been resistant to pull back the curtain on these design methods for a few reasons. First, releasing that knowledge into the product creation community could have a serious impact on people’s perception of pricing for design. I’ve seen it before. People think that if something doesn’t take long to create, it shouldn’t cost as much…it doesn’t matter how amazing it looks. Quite honestly, I hate that “hours for dollars” mindset because it minimizes the skill of the artist. Second, learning the design secrets I use has taken me YEARS to perfect, and to hand them over…well, how do you put a price on that. Heck, I charged $750 to $1,500 for ever cover I created.
After a lot of thought and soul-searching, I realized that my desire to see my customers and friends be able to create truly amazing looking designs for the book covers and info products was greater than the objections I held toward revealing my secrets. Then, with Adobe announcing that they were releasing their products on a subscription basis, I knew that it was time to do something special. Finally, the necessary software tools were available to everyone. And so, I have decided to share what I know about cover design in a brand-new video series titled:
